Question 31. Write a story in your own words about the brave horse of Maharana Pratap which is known as “Chetak”. (150-200 words)

Answer.                   A HORSE – BEAUTIFUL & LOYAL

History claims that Maharana Pratap Singh was one of the 10 strongest warriors ever born in India. The battle of Haldi Ghati in June 1576 saw his forces decisively outnumbered by the Mughal army led by Man Singh. Mounted on his favourite horse chetak, Maharana Pratap charged towards the commander of the Mughal army and made a frontal attack on Man Singh’s elephant. Once Chetak raised high in the air and planted his hooves on the forehead of the elephant. This was a turning point in the battle. In the general chaos that followed, Chetak received a fatal wound in one of his legs. An elephant’s tusk tore thought his rear legs and crippled it, but he would not give up. With his wounded king on the saddle, Chetak made his way back to safety on his three good legs. People do not remember the defeat of Maharana Pratap, but the courage and valour of his men and his horse. Chetak was exhausted but labored on, carrying his master, about 2 miles from the site of the battle near a small stream. It was here, while trying to leap across a stream that Chetak collapsed.

Maharana Pratap erected a small monument for his loyal companion at the place where he fell. And since then we pay a tribute to this brave warrior and his brave horse, Chetak.

According to historians, Chetak was a small horse and had blue colour. Therefore, in the local folklore, Maharana Pratap is often referred to as the ‘Rider of the Blue Horse’. In fact, many claim that the horse had a well defined personality, almost like his master himself. When it came to traits and behavior.

Chetak was no less than his proud owner and thus a unique emotional bond existed between the two. Till date ballads, songs, poems are dedicated to honour this brave horse and immortalize him in the pages of history.

Question 32. Write a story in your own words about a loyal servant and how he helped his king.                      (150-200 words)

Answer.                      THE FAITHFUL SERVANT

Once upon a time, there was a very short-tempered king. Among his many servants, there was one who was very faithful. One day, the king went hunting. At the end of the day, he was tired, thirsty and hungry. The loyal servant fetched him water in a pitcher. While he was handing the pitcher to the king, the servant spilt some water on the king’s clothes in his hurry. The king, already touchy and tired, was furious. He immediately banished the loyal servant from the kingdom.

The servant was sad but did not lose heart. He went to live in a neighboring jungle. He taught himself everything he needed to survive in the forest. When he learnt how to use wood to make things, he built himself a small hut. He planted a garden and started growing vegetables and fruits. He collected the seeds from the trees in the forest and planted them in his garden. He learnt the ways of wild animals and to co-exist with them. He even made friends with some of the wild animals and some, he tamed. Slowly, he made peace with his solitary life in the jungle, but he did not forget the king. He remembered how well the king had looked after him, and waited for an opportunity to prove himself to the king again.

Many years passed and by now, the servant knew every nook and corner of the jungle. One day, while he was out gathering wild fruits, he came across a group of soldiers from the kingdom.

“I already have an army assembled outside the city gates. At my signal, they will invade the city”, said one of them.

“Good. Should we do away with the king too?”, another asked.

The servant had overheard the conversation, and realized that the soldiers were scheming to attack the kingdom and kill the king. The servant wanted to alert the king. But how would he do so? If he went back, the king might order him killed. He thought hard. He remembered how pigeons were used as couriers to carry information. He had a pet pigeon whom he had been training to respond to him. He wrote a massage on a piece of parchment, signed it with a symbol that he knew the king would remember, and sent it to the king.

The message reached the king. He immediately foiled the plan of his enemy. He also recognized the sender. He realized the mistake he had made by banishing a servant who had remained faithful to him despite his own unjust treatment of the man. He invited the servant back to the kingdom. He also appointed him minister as a reward for his loyalty and resourcefulness.
